Top Ten Reasons to go with a Greyhound Rescue
These wonderful dogs need a new home when retired from their racing career. Here are some of the qualities that make them excellent additions to a caring family.
1) Loving
Greyhounds are loving and expressive. They have big doe eyes and make facial expressions that suit their mood. They will suck up to you for attention and pats.
2) Fun
Playful but not hyper. Greyhounds will play tug of war, chase balls, love to play catch with a Frisbee, rip around in the park for a few minutes.
3) Quiet
Greyhounds are not a very vocal breed. It's one of the qualities that also make them great apartment dogs. They make terrible guard dogs since they are not loud and intimidating.
4) Trainable
Sit, stay, down, bow, come. These are some of the main commands you can quickly train your Greyhound to understand. They aren't rocket scientists but they aren't dummies either.
5) Laziest Dog Ever
These 45 mile per hour couch potatoes sleep for what seems like 18 hours a day. All you need to do is provide two brief walks a day and these dogs stay happy and healthy. Greyhounds will flop down on the ground, any dog bed, couch, or curl up in your bed. They are like giant cats.
6) Quirky
Greyhounds have a few quirky character traits that are consistent across the breed, such as "Zoomies" (energy bursts where they run in circles or do spins), "Roaching" (sleeping on their backs with the legs up in the air). My greyhound rescue is always sticking her tongue out and not realizing.
7) Friendly / People Dog
Greyhound rescues are great with people, including children. My greyhound is very affectionate, passive and puts up with kids poking and hugging etc.
8) Beautiful
These dogs are stunning. Sleek, muscular, expressive and delicate. In fact the 2016 National Dog Show winner was Gia, a Greyhound.
9) Independant
These dogs are not needy. They like to go lay down and rest and do their own thing. In the dog park they will go sniff and explore. They will say "hi" to other dogs, maybe play for a moment, and then continue on doing their own thing.
10) Short Hair
Greyhounds have a thin coat with short hair. They barely shed which makes the house easier to keep clean compared to other breeds. In the summer their hair will thin even further on their hind legs and belly to keep them cool.
Obviously there are exceptions to the rule but in general the observed temperament of the breed supports these points.
